Contaminated land is managed primarily through the Contaminated Land Management Act 1997 (CLM Act). This Act is administered by the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC). The Act applies when there is a significant risk of harm to humans and/or the environment.

State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) No 55 provides planning guidelines for the Remediation of Land. The SEPP includes a list of industries and the chemicals used, and identifies different remediation categories, depending on the environment surrounding a contaminated site.

More information can be found through the Department of Planning website.
