The New South Wales Government's approach to the delivery of its capital works program as implemented by the Department of Commerce encourages contractors to commit to long-term continuous improvement to achieve outstanding performance on construction projects in return for increased business opportunities and longer-term relationships through cooperative contracting.
In pursuing this approach, the Department has successfully implemented a number of Prequalification Schemes for contract works of various types and value ranges.
These include:
Consultant Prequalification Scheme 2008-2011 (for consulting engagements in specified work categories)
Contractor Prequalification and Best Practice Accreditation Scheme 2008-2010 (for Construction and Related Works)
The Department of Commerce is implementing the 2008–2010 Contractor Prequalification and Best Practice Accreditation Scheme for construction related works for contracts valued greater than $0.5M (prequalified contractors); greater than $2.5M (Best Practice accredited contractors).
The new integrated Scheme replaces the previous Contractor Prequalification Scheme 2005-2007 and Contractor Best Practice Accreditation Scheme 2005–2007 (refer to the document for replacement scheduling).
The Scheme prequalifies contractors for a range of Building works, contract systems, contract values and locations. The Scheme aims to promote initiatives and business practices by construction contractors that lead to a more competitive, innovative, productive and safe industry that is also socially and environmentally responsible.
2008–2013 Contractor Pre-qualification Scheme in Sydney Basin
The Department of Commerce is implementing the 2008-2013 Contractor Prequalification Scheme in Sydney Basin for construction related works for contracts valued at:
· up to $1.0M (prequalified contractors).
This new Scheme replaces the previous Sydney Basin Contractor Prequalification Scheme 2003-2008 (refer to the document for replacement scheduling).
The Scheme prequalifies contractors for a range of Building works, work categories and contract values. The Scheme aims to promote initiatives and business practices by construction contractors that lead to a more competitive, innovative, productive and safe industry that is also socially and environmentally responsible.
Consultant Prequalification Scheme 2004-2007 Legal Services Panel (for engagements in legal services)

In addition, the Department has implemented a number of contractor prequalification schemes for minor and trade works construction related contracts valued up to $500,000. These Schemes are adminstered by the Department's respective regional offices.
